3. Content Strategy
3.2 Content Structure & Format
If an AI cannot parse your content, it cannot use it. GEO requires writing for machines first, humans second (or simultaneously).
The "Inverted Pyramid" Structure
AI models often prioritize the beginning of a document (or context window).
- The Answer: State the direct answer immediately (first 2-3 sentences).
- The Evidence: Provide data, quotes, and reasoning.
- The Details: Background info and nuance.
AI-Friendly Formatting
1. Headers (H1, H2, H3)
Use clear, question-based headers.
- Bad: "Thoughts on Price"
- Good: "How much does HubSpot cost in 2024?"
2. Lists and Bullet Points
AI models love structured lists. They are easy to extract and summarize.
- Use ordered lists for steps.
- Use unordered lists for features.
3. Data Tables
Tables are the gold standard for GEO.
- If you are comparing products, use a table.
- If you are showing pricing, use a table.
- LLMs can read HTML tables perfectly and often transcribe them directly into the answer.
4. Direct/Definition Sentences
Start paragraphs with clear definitions.
- "Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is..."
- This structure increases the chance of becoming a Featured Snippet or AI definition source.
Schema Markup
Structured Data (JSON-LD) is a direct communication line to the machine.
- FAQPage: For Q&A sections.
- Article/NewsArticle: For core content.
- Product: For e-commerce (Price, Availability, Reviews).
- HowTo: For step-by-step guides.
